Road Conditions

Yosemite roads range in elevation from about 2,000 feet in El Portal to nearly 10,000 feet at Tioga Pass on Highway 120, the highest highway over the Sierra.  Like trails, road conditions vary from season to season, day to day, and even hour to hour during storms.

Several park roads are only open during the summer season, including the Tioga Road (Hwy 120) and the Glacier Point Road.  Check to make sure that the road is open before you plan a one-way hike.

From November 1 to April 30 all vehicles are required to carry tire chains fitted for its drive wheels.  This includes four-wheel-drive vehicles. Read below for more important information on chain requirements.

River Conditions

Many visitors to Yosemite find themselves in trouble on park watercourses. All watercourses in the park have specific regulations reguarding prohibited activities and periods of closure. This is to protect human life and the integrity of the watersheds.  Be sure of the conditions and regulations for the section of water you get wet.
